Choosing The Right Grip Size

A key fundamental in golf is a sound, functional grip. Whether it be an overlapping or interlocking style, your grip must be correct for you to swing properly. I teach the grip under the premise that the top hand is the lead hand, or is the one that has the most control over the club. For right-handed players, this is your left hand.
Jack Nicklaus was famous for promoting a grip with the left hand working in a dominant fashion and is also a proponent of custom club fitting as a part of learning to grip the club properly.
If the grips on your clubs are the right size for your hands, your will be able to get a secure grip on the club with the pinky of your left hand (top hand). By having control with the smallest finger on your hand, the other fingers are sure to be in good positions as well.
If your grips are too big, however, your club will slip out of the picky and end up positioned too much in the palm of your left hand. This will create extra tension in your fingers, hand and arm. This “palmy” grip will also limit your ability to hinge the club properly and limit your power as well.
The next time your head out to practice, check to be sure that your grips are the right size and that your left pinky can wrap securely around the club.
