Golf Tip #2 - Wedge Fitting

Sole of club flush to the ground - Ideal

The proper fitting of your wedges is critical for creating consistent impact.  Many players do not realize that the wedges, more than any other clubs in their bag, must have the right lie angle in order to work correctly.  Ideally, a lob or sand wedge will sit flush to the ground when you address the ball for chipping.

Toe up at address - lie angle too upright

By far, the most common error I see is players having the wedges with the lie angle too upright, which makes the club sit improperly on the ground at address.  When the lie is too upright, the heel sits down in the grass and the toe is up in the air.  During the stroke, the heel will catch in the turf, closing down the face at impact.  As the face closes, the leading edge digs into the ground causing inconsistent contact.  This is a common cause of distance control problems in the short game.

Heel up at address - lie angle too flat If you are going to make a fitting error, be sure to make your lie angle too flat.  By being set to a flatter angle, the toe will now sit more into the grass at address and the heel will be slightly off the ground.  If the toe does get caught in the turf during the stroke, the club face will be forced into a more open position at impact.  This will expose the bounce of the wedge into the ground behind the ball assuring you clean, repeatable contact.
